Tanzania - Zanzibar
The Spice Island! I had wanted to visit Zanzibar for many years - it was once part of the Omani Empire (and we lived in Oman for five years in the early 1990's), but was also the birthplace and childhood home of that famous Zoroastrian Farrokh Bulsara (aka Freddie Mercury). We spent a few days there after our fantastic safaris in Kenya and Tanzania (see various albums under East Africa), and absolutely loved it! Historic and atmospheric Stone Town*, the very interesting spice plantations of the interior, the beautiful sandy beaches of Nungwi and the endangered Red Colobus monkeys of the Jozani Forest. A great place to explore and to relax! Pole pole! (* = UNESCO World Heritage Site)
