Poland - Krakow and Wieliczka
We like to visit a different Christmas Market each year, and to take a few days to explore the city and its surroundings. In 2017 we visited Krakow in Poland, and also made a trip to the famous salt mines in nearby Wieliczka. Krakow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Its Old Town was one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites (in 1978, together with Quito and Galapagos). Medieval town walls (built after the city had been raised by the Mongols), numerous churches, a royal palace and cathedral on Wawel Hill and a large Jewish quarter. The Wieliczka salt mines have been worked since medieval times; in addition to their functional requirements, they also contain a number of chapels, with religious works carved by the miners. A fascinating and historic city!
