Mexico and Central America - Mesoamerican Sites

In early 2022 we completed a fantastic, 3,500km trip - through Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and back into Eastern Mexico (see map) - to explore many of the mesoamerican sites. Whilst often referred to as Mayan sites, there were many civilisations - Olmec, Zapotec, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Mayan, Mixtec and Aztec. We visited Tenochtitlan (in Mexico City, where we also visited two excellent museums), Teotihuacan*, Monte Alban*, Mitla, Palenque*, Bonampak, Yaxchilan, Tikal*, Xunantunich, Tulum, Chichen Itza* and Uxmal*. Whilst Europe languished in the dark ages, these were advanced civilisations, with the smaller cities accommodating perhaps 30,000 people and the largest (Teotihuacan) about 120,000. In addition to these fabulous sites, we also saw and experienced some of the local culture (with many communities still speaking Mayan languages), colonial history, landscapes, wildlife etc. - see separate albums for each of the countries.
